Lasagna Bolognese

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 carrots finely chopped
  • 2 stalks celery finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes 1 can
  • 1/2 cup red wine optional
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 12 lasagna noodles cooked
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese grated

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet. Sauté onion, carrots, and celery until softened. Add garlic and cook briefly.
  3. Add ground beef and pork and cook until browned. Stir in crushed tomatoes, wine, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer 20–30 minutes until thickened.
  4. For béchamel, melt butter in a saucepan. Whisk in flour and cook 1–2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  5. Spread a thin layer of Bolognese in the baking dish. Layer noodles, Bolognese, béchamel, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese.
  6. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 15–20 minutes more until bubbly and golden.
  7. Rest 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired and serve hot.

Notes

For even deeper flavor, make the Bolognese a day ahead. Serve with garlic bread and salad for a classic Italian-style meal.
