Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup onion finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Green Mill Texas Toast or any frozen garlic Texas toast
  • 1 ounce cheddar cheese shredded, approximately 1/4 ounce per serving

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C), or follow the temperature recommended on the Texas toast package. Arrange the frozen Texas toast slices on a baking sheet and set aside.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped onion. Cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking the beef into small pieces until it is fully browned and the onion has softened. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Sprinkle the garlic powder over the cooked beef and stir until evenly combined.
  4. Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and black pepper. Stir until the beef is thoroughly coated with the sauce.
  5. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your preferred consistency.
  6. While the beef mixture simmers, bake the Texas toast for approximately 5–6 minutes, or according to the package instructions, until golden brown and crispy. Flip the slices halfway through if necessary.
  7. Remove the toasted bread from the oven and spoon a generous portion of the warm Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over each slice.
  8. Sprinkle approximately 1/4 ounce of shredded cheddar cheese over each serving, distributing it evenly.
  9. Return the assembled toast to the oven and bake for another 1–2 minutes, or until the cheddar cheese has melted.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow the Texas Toast Sloppy Joes to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy while hot and crispy!

Notes

For extra flavor, add diced bell peppers or a pinch of smoked paprika to the beef mixture. Substitute mozzarella or pepper jack cheese for cheddar to create a delicious variation.
